When the pilot is lit it heats the thermocouple that reacts through temprature/expansion relationship with a sprung seated valve that stops gas being supplied to the main burners.

When the thermocouple is hot enough it allows this seated valve to lift so that when you release from the pilot position gas is ready to be delivered to your main burners. When you now turn your flame position control a sprung loade ported valve turns allow differing rates of gas to flow. Your Sprung loaded valve has probably broke at the control spring. It is under the aluminium M8 nut at the back.

I dont know if you can buy this spare, i imagine its very cheap to produce so you may have to buy a new control valve. I'm not a gas engineer just an engineer who has a greater interest in how thing work rather than taking money out of your pocket. Looking at them it should take a registered competent gas fitter no longer than 15 minutes to change plus his post fit checks. It's a shame you cant do it yourself and just get someone in to safe regiter it but hey thats the way it goes. Remove the two screws holding the cast iron top cover and lift it off.

Next remove the front base and then the gold covers. They just lift off. Then remove all the screws and plates holding the glass cover onand carefully remove the glass.

This will give you access to the thermocouple. There is a plate below the thermocouple on the front of the fire held in place by two screws. Remove these and the plate and you then have access to the retaining screws for the thermocouple. Remove it and clean it out carefully with a very thin wire on long pin. You will probably find that it is clogged with dirt. When clean rebuild the thermocouple and try lighting.

If you get a pilot light but the fire still wont light, carefully alter the position of the small narrow pipe to the right of the thermocouple until the gas fire lights. Putting the glass cover in place temorarily will help the fire to ignite. I hope this helps It cost me £20 to get this done by a friendly gas fitter. December 2008 We have just had the engineer out - second time since had the fire - it is just dust/dirt that gets in the ignitor - he has told us twice that we must keep the pilot light on and not to turn off. Also there is a metal prong in the ignitor that is made of different metals and if they get hot and expand they dont always line up.

It will prob cost you abt £55 to mend. Julie November 2008 It could be that the spade connectors to the thermocouple gas flow switch need cleaning. It did the trick on mine. The switch is located behind the righthand side panel of the fire.
