Mar 18, 2015 - The series of six numbers on the left side of the receiver is the serial number of the Japanese Arisaka Type 38, which is 749348. Serial number should be found on the underside of the bolt handle base. The Japanese Type 99 Arisaka he war, the Type 38 and Type 99 Arisakas.

Hello ARG: The rifle serial number is stamped on all Arisakas ( T-30 to 99 ) on the left receiver wall along with the arsenal logo and production proofs. Also if later production a series Kana marking enclosed in a circle will be stamped to the left of the serial number. Early production Arisakas ( T-30 to 44 ) also had a 'assembly number' stamped on all internal parts under the stock that has nothing to do with the serial number.

Just about all parts on early actions were assembly numbered, mid 1920s began to use mixed numbers, later 1930s only the serial number was used on the major parts and many small ones were unnumbered. So on early rifles you can expect all parts to be numbered by the assembly numbers, late ones only the last three digits of the serial number on important parts only. There can be confusion when rifles were arsenal rebuilt where old numbers were barred out and renumbered with the last three of the serial number, or mixed parts used and not renumbered. Reading the main books will help to sort out this subject, on hands experience is the best teacher. ARG: Actually the T-30 and early 38 system of marking everything was an old system of manufacture when people took pride in what they built. By the time of the last ditch T-99 only the bolt components and the receiver were serialized, all other interior parts were blank. That shows the same hurry and slipshod manufacture as the late German rifles.

Note that this is most noticeable among the loosers of WW2, but you can see less markings even in the US M-1 Garand parts. The USA says that it was no longer necessary as they had achieved commonality in mass production. The fact that German and Japanese arms were fully numbered in the beginning was due to the hand fitting required to manufacture arms, neither ever truly reached the level of mass production as in the US. So initially there was a logical but complex system of numbering, it changed during the 40+ years of production reflecting the simplification and secrecy of the series markings to accomodate production in the millions of rifles, bayonets, and pistols.
